Petrochemicals are a group of chemicals derived from petroleum, it is very common for these ingredients to be irritating, and drying to skin. Not to mention the possibility of being carcinogenic and that they can wreak havoc on our metabolism and hormones. The production of petrochemicals also causes environmental concerns (air pollution). Here at Whipped Earth, we feel these chemicals are null and void in our products, as many plant based oils and derivatives provide the same or similar purpose with much less risks to our health and the environment.
Common ingredients that are petrochemical derived:
Mineral oil is a byproduct of refined crude oil. Several studies have found mineral oil does do the job of repelling moisture from the surface of hair and skin; think water running off a ducks back. This may be good if your hair is prone to frizz, however here at Whipped Earth we think plant derived oils such as coconut oil are better at protecting the hair and skin in the long term, both on a human and planetary perspective.
DEA (diethanolamine) or MEA (ethanolaine)– This group of chemical compounds is linked to liver tumors. They are used to help water based and oil based products blend together (emulsify). Whipped Earth uses alternatives, such as Cetyl Alcohol, Brassica Alcohol, Caprylyl/ Capryl Glucoside to provide the same effect without the same risks.
EDTA (ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid) is included in many hair and skincare products as a preservative, helping to prevent the growth of bacteria, yeasts, and moulds in your skincare product. Preservatives have a bad reputation in the skincare world, but do help to extend your product’s shelf life and reduce user contamination. Whipped Earth uses Eco Certified Preservatives that achieve the same result using plant derived ingredients but contain no nasties!
PEGS (Polyethylene glycol) and Propylene Glycol attracts moisture to itself to help with moisture retention; however both of these are “penetration enhancing” meaning it will absorb moisture from anything around it. This can include harmful toxins (in the skincare product or environment) that may not have been able to get through the skin before (they piggyback in). Vegetable glycerin and sodium lactate both draw moisture from the environment without penetrating the skin, and are used safely in your Whipped Earth products.
Phthalates are plasticizers use to make plastics more flexible or fragrances last longer; think smelly candles and goopy slime toys. In skincare they are used to increase the longevity of a product (same as a preservative) but they also allow a product to cling better to the skin or hair. Whipped Earth doesn’t use them; phthalates are endocrine disruptors, meaning they pose as estrogen and can interfere with your metabolism and normal hormonal function. We honestly feel that the service they provide to skincare is of no benefit and therefore they do not need to be replaced with an alternative, Whipped Earths natural preservatives are enough!
Parfum or Fragrance are responsible for making the laundry aisle and those sweet smelly candles we all love; smell so good. I hate to tell you this but those scents are fake! What is worse those fragrances are made with phthalates -yes those nasties we just mentioned above, that do your hormones not benefit! Instead of using fake smells we use essential oils at maximum 2% usage rate. For little earthlings (i.e. children) the amount is reduced to just 0.5%.
Triclosan has been added to soaps and body washes claiming to be antibacterial. Recent studies found there’s no evidence that these antibacterial soaps and body washes containing provide any benefit over plain soap and water. Studies have found Triclosan altered the hormones in animals, and that the animals have developed antibiotic-resistant germs; it is strongly suggestive that it might be harmful to our immune system. Triclosan isn’t an essential ingredient and there are plenty of essential oils with proven antibiotic, anti-fungal and antiseptic properties, and these are our preference.
FD and C Synthetic colours are made from coal tar derivatives and are known to be carcinogenic and cause skin irritations. Whipped Earth uses natural colours from mica, clay and plants.
The next group of ingredients can be either natural or synthetic: we prefer to leave them out, because there are ingredients in our formulas that already for fill the role of that particular ingredient or because we feel they don’t serve a necessary purpose.
Parabens are similar to phthalates – they are used as preservatives but are also endocrine disruptors. There are far better preservative systems on the market these days and Whipped Earth products are formulated to use these instead.
Dimethicone and Cyclomethicone are both silicones used to condition and create a barrier around the hair shaft. While these two ingredient do not present any health risks, over time, silicones can build up on your hair, resulting in a dry feel and dull appearance. You may notice your hair actually becomes weaker and more prone to breakage. Whipped Earth uses plant oils to add moisture and plant proteins to help with strength.
SLS/SLES (Sodium Lauryl Sulfate and Sodium Laureth Sulfate) are used for their cleansing properties but are actually very drying, and known to cause irritations. There are much milder options available that do the same job without the drawbacks and create just as many bubbles!!!!
